Northern Railway came into existence on 14-04-1952 as a part of the Indian Railways. Northern Railway is the largest zone of the Indian Railways. Today, more than 1.75 Lakh employees man the Northern Railway Zone. India’s capital, New Delhi, where the Parliament, the Supreme Court of India and the Railway-Board are situated, all fall under NR. The Northern Railway Zone has been home to many of our revered gods, goddesses and great saints, by whose grace we are all guided. Even many of the country's great patriots like Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh and Lala Lajpat Rai, who sacrificed their lives, were born within the ambits of the Northern Railway Zone, a heritage which forever makes us proud.
It is the result of such blessings and inspirations that during wars and natural disasters Northern Railway Employees, along with the entire Indian Railway organisation, have worked for the defence and perseverance of our country's unity.
For these contributions and as a part of our country's inherent democratic process for maintaining peaceful coexistence, the Railway Administration approved the setting up of the Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union in the year 1954. The union facilitates a system of negotiation with the Railway Administration for redressal of the demands and grievances of the Northern Railway employees and workers.
Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union firmly believes in the Gandhian principles of non-violence and peaceful negotiations. Even when our disagreements with other parties are severe, we always strive for an amicable solution, acceptable to all. Hence, I appeal to all Railway Employees to put their weight behind the joint cause of employee welfare and empowerment by supporting the Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union. I assure you that URMU is first and foremost a people's organisation and as its guardians we will make every effort for the betterment of the Northern Railway Employees, the Indian Railways and the Nation as a whole.
